Members are invited to meet at the Inner Carpark at Birdsland, 271 Mt Morton Road, Belgrave Heights at 9am, Thursday 11th June.
You can come via McNicol Road, Tecoma (turn off by primary school) or via Belgrave South, weaving through several roads from Belgrave-Hallam Road to get to Mt Morton Road. Turn into driveway by the carpark and drive in – it’s about 1km and does have potholes at this time of year, with puddles, so be aware. Park at the inner car park – there are toilets but not sure if they’re open at the moment. The walk around the 2 lakes is just under 3km on flat ground. Or we can walk up other pathways that takes us up the hill or beyond the lakes heading towards Lysterfield. Depends on how long you all want to be out for.
There are lots of different types of birds there, especially in the morning, but we might see kangaroos and wallabies as well. There are signs for wombats and echidnas but not seen any there yet during my visits. Plus lots of plant life, cobwebs caught by the sun with dewdrops, mist on the lake (if we’re lucky), occasionally I see someone flying a paraglider overhead and so on. We might see the moon too, as it’s due to set just before midday on the 11th.
Dress warm – it’s in a valley and can be colder than Belgrave or Tecoma.
Did you know that Birdsland isn’t named for its occupants, but rather after the family that used to own it? Their surname was Bird.
